How to Afford Therapy in Houston: 9 Real Options When Money Is Tight

November 3, 2026 · 6 min read

You are not alone in this

If you have ever looked up a therapist, seen the price of a single session, and quietly closed the tab, you are far from the only one. Cost is one of the most common barriers between people and the care they need.

The good news is that there are more options than most people realize. None of them are perfect, and some take a little patience, but help is closer than it feels right now.

Nine places to start

Work through this list from the top. Many people combine two or three of these.

  • Nonprofit financial assistance: Organizations like Martha's Legacy help cover the cost of therapy for people in Houston and Lufkin who cannot afford it.
  • Sliding-scale therapists: Many private therapists lower their fee based on income. Ask directly. The worst answer is no.
  • Community mental health centers: Publicly funded centers offer counseling and psychiatric care, often with fees based on what you can pay.
  • University training clinics: Graduate counseling programs run clinics where supervised students provide low-cost therapy.
  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): Many employers offer a handful of free sessions. Check your benefits portal or ask HR.
  • Insurance and Medicaid: If you have coverage, call the number on your card and ask for in-network behavioral health providers and your copay.
  • Community and faith-based counseling: Some churches and community groups offer free or low-cost counseling.
  • Support groups: Peer-led groups cost little or nothing and can complement individual therapy.
  • Crisis lines: If you need to talk right now, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time day or night.

Questions to ask when you call a provider

Calling can be hard. A short script helps: "I'm looking for therapy and I'm worried about cost. Do you offer a sliding scale, and do you have any openings?"

You can also ask whether they take your insurance, what their cancellation policy is, and whether they offer telehealth, which can save on travel and time off work.
