Our Mission

Born from tragedy, built on hope — fighting for accessible mental health care.

Our History

How It All Began

Martha's Legacy was founded in honor of my sister, Martha, whose life was tragically cut short on January 15, 2021, in our hometown of Lufkin, Texas. Her adult son — my nephew — lives with Bipolar I disorder and was in the midst of a severe manic episode in the days leading up to the incident.

We were in communication with him, and it was clear he was decompensating and needed immediate help. As a family, we sought support everywhere we could. We contacted the local mental health authority, the Burke Center (MHMR), where he had been admitted before. We were told they could not intervene unless someone was already in danger.

We knew the situation was escalating, but there were no accessible crisis resources available to us — no proactive support, no timely intervention. We were left to wait.

Hours later, during that untreated manic crisis, my nephew stabbed my sister in the neck. She passed away soon after, and our family's world changed forever.

This tragedy revealed something painfully true:

Too many families in crisis have nowhere to turn.

Too many people living with mental illness cannot access help when they urgently need it.

Too many preventable tragedies occur because care is either unavailable, unaffordable, or unreachable.

In the midst of grief, anger, and heartbreak, one conviction grew clear: Martha's death will not be in vain.

Her love, compassion, and generosity were the core of who she was. She believed in helping others — even those who struggled the most. She believed her son deserved care, not a crisis. She believed every person living with mental illness deserved access to treatment and dignity.

Martha's Legacy was created to carry her love forward. To honor her. To fight for others like her. To ensure families facing mental health crises never feel as helpless and alone as we did.

This foundation exists as a call to action — one born from tragedy, but built on hope. Through Martha's Legacy, we raise awareness, provide financial support for mental health treatment, and work to ensure individuals in need receive care before crisis turns to tragedy.

Her life lives on in this mission. Her legacy is now our purpose.
