The Truth Behind Our Neighborhood's Numbers
Why It Matters — And Why It Starts Here, on 43rd and Shepherd
What's Actually Happening Behind the Front Doors on Your Block
The kid who comes into your shop after school three times a week? The teenager walking past your window on her lunch break? They are navigating something you probably don't see when they're paying for their order: a mental health crisis system that is overwhelmed, underfunded, and structurally designed to catch people only after the fall — never before it.
In Houston, adolescent mental health emergency visits have climbed year over year. Social media has accelerated anxiety, social comparison, and isolation in ways that parents in Oak Forest and Garden Oaks are fighting to understand every single night. Substance experimentation is starting earlier. And the gap between a child in distress and a child getting professional support remains brutally wide — not because parents don't care, but because the infrastructure to close that gap simply doesn't exist at the neighborhood level.
Until now. That's the exact gap the Legacy Alliance is designed to close — block by block, storefront by storefront, along the 43rd and Shepherd corridors you already own.
1 in 5
Houston youth experience a diagnosable mental health condition before age 18.
The majority receive no professional intervention — not for lack of need, but because the first access point (a trusted adult in a familiar physical space) is simply missing from their daily environment.
70%
Of all substance use disorders begin before age 18, most in middle and early high school.
Early, visible community intervention — the kind a Safe Space decal and trained local business creates — is the most cost-effective harm reduction tool proven to work.
0
Dedicated youth harm reduction or mental health safe spaces currently exist on the 43rd & Shepherd commercial corridors.
There is no single storefront between Oak Forest and Garden Oaks today where a teenager in crisis knows — with certainty — that they will be seen, heard, and connected to help. The Legacy Alliance fixes that.
Your Block
Is the single highest-leverage intervention point available — and it is already open for business.
No hotline, clinic, or school system can replicate what a trusted local business already has: a familiar face, a physical presence, and a front door that is already open five days a week.
Local Commerce Is the Shield. Martha's Legacy Is the Training. You Are the System.
Martha's Legacy deploys the programmatic infrastructure: the youth mental health workshops, the adolescent safety curricula, the crisis resource packets, and the professional education partnerships led by Kattie Maldonado, M.Ed., a credentialed autism coach and education advocate with over a decade of direct family advocacy experience.
What we cannot deploy without you is physical presence — the storefront visibility, the trusted neighborhood relationship, and the daily foot traffic that makes a program real inside the community it serves rather than adjacent to it.
Your business becomes the bridge between a family in need and the help Martha's Legacy has already built. That is not charity. That is infrastructure. And it starts with your name on this map.
Your Partnership Benefits
What You Receive as a Legacy Alliance Partner
This is not a donation request. It is a business investment that returns in the currency Oak Forest and Garden Oaks run on: community trust, neighborhood loyalty, and local brand authority that no paid ad can manufacture.
The Physical Asset
Official “Legacy Alliance Safe Space” Window Decal
A professionally co-branded, weatherproof, high-visibility window decal installed directly on your storefront glass. This is not a sticker from a printer — it is an official certification mark that the families of Oak Forest and Garden Oaks will be trained to recognize, look for, and respond to.
Signals immediately to every parent walking by that your business is a certified community Safe Space for their child.
Drives active foot traffic from neighborhood families who are already making purchase decisions based on community alignment.
Creates a permanent, physical association between your business name and neighborhood safety — the most powerful brand positioning available on 43rd and Shepherd.
Differentiates your storefront visually and reputationally from every uncertified business on your block.
The Education Asset
Counter Resource Kit & Crisis Protection Materials
A curated counter-display kit — co-branded under the Legacy Alliance and Martha's Legacy — that turns your checkout area, waiting space, or front table into a passive community resource hub. These materials do not require any time, training, or effort from your team. They simply sit there and work.
Co-branded parent resource flyers covering adolescent mental health warning signs, conversation guides for starting the talk, and local support connections.
Adolescent crisis protection guides written in plain, accessible language that parents actually keep and reference — not glossy pamphlets that get tossed.
Specialized mental health safety packets covering digital safety, social media harm reduction, and early substance use intervention tailored for families with middle and high school aged children.
Quarterly material refreshes as Kattie Maldonado, M.Ed. updates content to reflect evolving adolescent safety research and community-specific data.

Why We Built This
Martha's Legacy exists because our family lost someone we loved, in Lufkin, Texas, on January 15, 2021 — and the mental health system was not there when we needed it most. Not because the people in it didn't care. Because the infrastructure at the community level simply did not exist.
We built Martha's Legacy to close that gap — one city, one neighborhood, one corridor at a time. The Legacy Alliance is how we bring that mission to the specific blocks where Oak Forest and Garden Oaks families actually live, shop, eat, and raise their kids.
You are not being asked to solve the mental health crisis. You are being asked to hold open one door — with your name on it — so that the families who already trust you know you are standing on their side.
