Why silence is so costly
Many people carry pain quietly because they fear being judged, seen as weak, or treated differently. That fear is stigma, and it keeps people from asking for help until things become much harder.
At Martha's Legacy, fighting stigma is one of our four core pillars. Our story is a reminder of what silence can cost.
Where stigma comes from
Stigma grows from misunderstanding, from old myths that mental illness is a character flaw, and from families and cultures where struggles are simply not discussed. It is learned, which means it can be unlearned.
Ways you can help change the conversation
- Use respectful language. Say "person living with depression" rather than labels or jokes.
- Share your own story if and when you feel ready. Honesty gives others permission to speak.
- Treat mental health like physical health. Asking "how is your mental health?" should feel as normal as asking about a sore knee.
- Respond with kindness when someone opens up. Your reaction teaches them whether it is safe.
- Support organizations working to make care accessible.
Every conversation matters
You do not need to be an expert. You only need to be willing to listen. If this post speaks to you, share it with someone who might need to hear it.
